Mobile County Health Dept Revives In-Person Breastfeeding Support

April 9, 2024
The Mobile County Health Department (MCHD) proudly rejuvenates The Lactation Circle, a pivotal support forum for breastfeeding mothers. As global health concerns have abated, MCHD reinstates face-to-face meet-ups to encourage successful breastfeeding experiences. Guided by WIC’s Breastfeeding Coordinator, LaDina Hudson, the initiative is tailored to relieve common breastfeeding hurdles and foster a nurturing community among new mothers. This hands-on effort aims to empower women via interactive engagement, collective insights, and professional counsel, proving indispensable for mothers navigating the nursing journey. In doing so, MCHD reinforces its dedication to the health and prosperity of mothers and infants throughout the community.

Embracing In-Person Interactions

The Lactation Circle’s transition back to an in-person format signifies a renewed appreciation for the community-building that arises from direct contact. Held at Keeler’s Auditorium on North Bayou Street in Downtown Mobile, sessions are available on Tuesdays and Thursdays, offering two convenient time slots for mothers. Switching to a physical setting not only enriches interpersonal connections but also avails mothers the opportunity for practical lactation advice and comprehensive knowledge in a supportive space. The enthusiastic response from participants highlights the value of in-person engagement for hands-on assistance that is often less effective through digital means.Within the auditorium’s walls, mothers can freely share their breastfeeding experiences, addressing challenges that range from latching issues and milk supply concerns to integrating nursing into their daily routines. The WIC Breastfeeding Peer Counselor program, featuring Andrea Portis, Terilyn Hodges, and Marisha Wright, provides bespoke support. This tailored approach allows individualized attention, ensuring each mother’s unique needs are met.

Ensuring Support Reaches Every Mother

The Mobile County Health Department embodies its pledge to make breastfeeding support universally attainable by offering flexible counseling options. LaDina Hudson and her colleagues extend their expertise through phone consultations for those who cannot attend sessions physically. Addressing a spectrum of topics, including workplace breastfeeding balance, public feeding management, and overcoming nursing challenges, they are steadfast in encompassing every mother’s circumstance. This inclusive stance by the WIC’s Breastfeeding Peer Counselor program strives to dismantle barriers, guaranteeing comprehensive breastfeeding assistance across Mobile County. The department invites all eligible mothers to engage in this program, fostering a healthier community and emphasizing the significance of early maternal support.
